  • NSF Award: Awarded a new $600,000 NSF NeTS project, Immersi-Fi, to develop a multi-connectivity LiFi platform for mobile immersive systems. The project is led by Rongqing Hui, with Jacob Chakareski and Morteza Hashemi serving as Co-PIs.
  • Editorial Appointment: Appointed Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Networking.
  • Publications: Six journal and conference papers were published or accepted, including papers in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking, IEEE GLOBECOM, and IEEE CCNC.
  • Professional Service: Serving as Publication Co-Chair for IEEE/IFIP WiOpt 2026.
2025
  • Promotion: Promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas.
  • NSF Award: Our group received a $760,000 NSF award for AeroSpec: An Adaptive Spectrum Framework for Autonomous Aerial Systems, which integrates optimization, decentralized markets, and experimental deployment.
  • NSF Award: Joined a new NSF project on community-driven circular energy storage and the integration of second-life batteries into resilient energy systems.
  • Faculty Recognition: Received the KU School of Engineering Bellows Scholar Award.
  • Publications: Nine journal and conference papers were published or accepted, including articles in IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Machine Learning in Communications and Networking.
  • Student Achievement: Congratulations to Amin Shojaei and Babak Badnava on completing their PhD degrees.

  • Invited Talks: Presented invited talks on spectrum challenges and opportunities for UAV communications to the IEEE Kansas City Communications Society and the Western Regional Partnership Aviation/Airspace group.
2024
  • Publications: Seven journal and conference papers were published, including work on smart-grid decision networks, UAV communications, federated learning, semantic communications, immersive video, and cyber-physical-system security.
  • Professional Service: Served as Travel Grant and Sponsorship Co-Chair for ACM MobiHoc.
2023
  • NSF Award: Our group received a $600,000 NSF award for AirScope, a programmable UAV platform for end-to-end cellular-network measurements in rural environments.
  • Research Award: Joined a $1.5 million AFRL-supported project to establish a virtual VICEROY institute focused on cybersecurity and electromagnetic-spectrum education and research.
  • Publications: Seven journal and conference papers were published, including papers at IEEE GLOBECOM, Allerton, Asilomar, and IEEE VCC.
  • Invited Talk: Presented an invited seminar on distributed multi-agent reinforcement learning for cyber-physical systems at the University of North Dakota’s Center for Cybersecurity and AI Research.
  • Outreach: Organized the second Jayhawk Wireless Summer Camp, providing high school students with hands-on experience in wireless communications and software-defined radios.
2022
  • NSF Award: Joined a $1 million NSF GOALI project on communication-computation co-design for rural connectivity and intelligence.
  • Research Award: Received support from the KU Office of Research to develop X-Planet, an experimental testbed for advanced 5G and 6G wireless research.
  • Faculty Recognition: Received the KU School of Engineering Bellows Scholar Award.
  • Outreach: Founded the Jayhawk Wireless Summer Camp for high school students, featuring hands-on activities in wireless communications and software-defined radios.
  • Publication: A paper on QoE-centric multi-user millimeter-wave scheduling was published at the IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory.
  • Student Achievement: Congratulations to Serigne Seck and Brian Quiroz on completing their MS degrees.

  • Research Award: Joined an Office of Naval Research project on distributed spectrum-scenario fusion and compression.

  • Teaching Support: Received a KU Center for Teaching Excellence grant supporting the Revolutionizing Academia Learning Community.

  • NSF Award: Joined a $438,000 NSF project on combating latency and disconnection in millimeter-wave networks, spanning theoretical analysis and experimental implementation.
  • NASA and USRA Award: Our group received a $399,903 award to develop spectrum-management methods for unmanned aerial systems and beyond-visual-line-of-sight traffic management.
  • NSF CRII Award: Our group received a $174,214 NSF CRII award to investigate low-overhead and resilient multi-hop millimeter-wave networking.
  • PAWR Planning Grant: Participated in an NSF-supported planning project for the Nebraska Experimental Testbed of Things, a proposed advanced wireless research platform for rural communities.
  • Research Collaboration: Joined a project on distributed machine learning and sensor fusion for spectrum-sensing-system optimization.
  • Patents: Three U.S. patents were issued for technologies related to multi-hop wireless routing, rapid blockage recovery, and sectorized communication.
  • Publications: Three conference papers were published at IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE GLOBECOM, and the North American Power Symposium.
2019
  • Faculty Appointment: Joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas as an Assistant Professor.
  • Industry Award: Our group received a $265,596 research award from Sony Corporation of America to investigate dynamic routing for millimeter-wave communication systems.
  • Publications: Two conference papers were published on energy-aware mobile edge computing and delay-optimal integrated sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave networking.
